Netflix will bet on an original series called Clickbait where it will explore the dark side of social networks. Netflix says the series will be a look at the dangers of social networking and how people present themselves online.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plot will be about a young woman looking for the your missing brother. The case becomes mediatic thanks to the internet and social networks, making life difficult for the young woman, who just wants to reunite her family.
Clickbait will explore the behaviors fueled by social networks, illustrating the defragmentation between the people we are on social networks vs. who we are in real life. The series is still under development, and has no release date yet.
Clickbait is obviously inspired by Black Mirror
Black Mirror is a British series that exploits the interactions between humans and technology in our society, often negatively. The series illustrates scenarios and realities where technology and social networks make people’s daily lives easier but have potential consequences.
Some of the most iconic episodes in the series include “Nosedive”, “15 Million Merits “and the famous” Bandersnatch “. The latter became almost viral as it was the first episode of any Netflix series to allow multiple choices. Eventually Netflix expanded this concept into something similar to the adventurous Bear Grylls series.
As such, Netflix continues to focus on creating original content. It remains to be seen whether the series will be successful or just a “copy” of the aforementioned Black Mirror, who has already become an expert in exploring fiction in the context of social networking and technology.
